When I invest in a business, the money going in is principally my own capital, earned through building, acquiring and selling businesses myself.
That changes the relationship. I’m not investing somebody else’s fund and I’m not simply advising from the sidelines. I have my own money at risk alongside yours, so our interests need to be aligned.
I look for good businesses with strong potential where my capital, financial expertise and experience as a business owner can help create something more valuable.
Depending on the opportunity, that could mean providing capital for growth, supporting an acquisition, buying into an established business or working alongside an owner who wants to take some money off the table while continuing to build the business.
I’m investing more than money
I’m selective about where I invest because this is principally my own capital. I’ve earned it by building and selling businesses, so I care where it goes and, just as importantly, who I invest it with.
I’m not looking for passive investments where I provide a cheque and wait for an annual update. I want to understand the business, the opportunity and the people behind it.
I look for good businesses run by good people. People I trust, enjoy working with and believe I can support. In return, you get more than capital. You get my experience, financial expertise, commercial network and direct access to me when you need it.
I don’t need to control every business I invest in, but I do need alignment. If we share the same ambitions, can have honest conversations and both have something meaningful at stake, there’s the potential to build something great together.
